Functional movement is the ability to move your body with proper joint and muscle function to achieve effortless and pain-free movement. It is a balancing of the system to move effectively and efficiently without restriction. Learning how to move efficiently is key for maintaining good health and avoiding injuries. From birth, each person begins to develop dominant and weaker muscles. Injury, lack of physical exercise and accidents all contribute to poor muscle use habits and can limit the body’s ability to develop optimally. As a result, we fall short of utilizing or training functional movement systems for whole-body health. By moving the body in a compensatory pattern imbalances occur. Joint spaces narrow so there isn’t enough space for the bones to move freely which creates movement limitations as the muscles can’t fire effectively and overtime these muscle limitations can lead to injury. Fluid Motion encompasses functional movement with bodywork as part of a whole-body approach to help improve body awareness and solidify your efforts to learn new, more efficient muscle habits for improving functional movement. Fluid Motion therapists understand the physiology of how the body should move and will take you through restorative exercises to strengthen the areas that previously have been inhibited and weak and will customize a personal program so that you continue gaining strength and mobility. Functional movement helps increase strength and flexibility, improve fitness, eliminate aches and pains, enhance sports performance, reduce stress, and maximizes your quality of life.
Functional movement exercises train and develop your muscles to work together and prepare them to safely and efficiently do everyday activities. These exercises are designed to utilize various upper and lower body muscles at same time which also emphasizes core stability. The benefits of this type of training is that these exercises tend to be multijoint and multimuscle exercises which, when applied properly, can reduce your risk of injury, make everyday activities easier, and improve your quality of life.
Functional movement requires committed, consistent participation to achieve optimal success. All functional movement sessions are by appointment. The initial session will consist of a one-hour consultation to assess where you are and what is going on with your body. After the initial session, functional movement sessions are scheduled in blocks of four 1-hour sessions. Sessions are held either in your home or at the Fluid Motion Studio.
